Today on the WikiGreeks blog, we have a new piece by Charlie Psacharopoulos on the recent troubles of Peter Kyriakidis and his publishing empire.
In "Kyriakidis Publishing Empire Stressed As Bank of Greece Finds It Sucked into Proton's Black Hole", Mr. Psacharopoulos comments on the fallout from reports from the Bank of Greece revealing that major media outlets owned by Kyriakidis - and understood to be largely funded by Lavrentiadis - were among the recipients of loans from Proton Bank deemed improper by the Bank of Greece.
Mr. Psacharopoulos highlights specific report findings that Proton Bank funded Kyriakidis-owned NEP in order to enable it to acquire interests in ATHEX listed holdings which have greater political influence. The report does not describe why Lavrentiadis or Kyriakidis were seeking greater political influence, or what each individual intended to do with it, but it does suggest that their purchase of media companies that had no prospect of ever making a profit had to be explained by motives that were not economic or commercial in nature.
As a consequence, says Mr. Psacharoupolos, it appears that bank accounts related to Kyriakidis have been frozen in connection with lending from the now nationalised old Proton Bank. Workers at Peter Kyriakidis' publication, Espresso, also went on strike December 1 amid these disturbing reports and in response to Kyriakidis' attempts to reduce worker salaries and threats to fire journalists.
